Obituary of Iris Merced Otero

Iris Merced Otero, 81, currently of Shelton passed peacefully into the hands of The Lord in her sleep on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Bridgeport Hospital, Bridgeport, CT. Iris was born in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico to the late Domingo Merced and Dolores Aguirre. She is the beloved wife of the late Pablo Otero, Sr. whom she was married to for fifty years. Iris and her husband were the proud owners of Borinquen Market in Bridgeport, CT for ten years prior to their retirement. The loving couple returned to Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico in 1980 where they lived till "death do them part" and Pablo went to rest into God's Presence. Iris then returned to Shelton, CT where she came to be close to her family and remained a resident for past eleven years. Iris had unforgettable qualities that she was never afraid to share with others, from her strong willed personality to her feistiness, yet her caring ways of giving advice and her constant worry for the well being of her family and others; She was notorious for the immense love she had towards her beloved husband whom she would still call her boyfriend after all the years they were together and still to these days leading up to her passing, she would still call him the same, simply put, she was always in Love with him; Her memory and life will be forever cherished by her children Pablo Otero, Jr. (Pat), Iris Reyes (Pedro), Jenny Otero Cornwell (David), David Otero (Abigail), and Julio Otero. In addition to her children she was also survived by her loving grandchildren Pedro, Joseph, Jennifer, Isabel, Christine, Angela, Lisa, Davone, Anthony, David Jr., Julio, Jr., and Joel; fourteen great-grandchildren; her siblings Damaso Morales (Rogelia) and Marin Merced (Margarita); many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends that will miss her dearly. The family is very thankful for the support and compassion provided by the nursing and care staff at Bridgeport Hospital, tower 10 west, as well as the staff at Bishop Wicke Health Center in Shelton. Also a special thank you to her caregiver of many years Mrs. Ivette. Friends are invited to attend calling hours on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Funeraria Luz de Paz (Peaceful Light Funeral Home) 426 E. Washington Ave., Bridgeport from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral Services are scheduled for Saturday, July 9, 2016 starting with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Bridgeport.
