Obituary of Josephine Hernandez

Josefina "Doña Josie" Tosado de Hernandez , age 83, of Trumbull, CT, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. She leaves behind her beloved husband Gregorio Hernandez of 54 years. Born in Camuy, Puerto Rico on December 2, 1928, Josefina moved to New York City with her daughter Olga I. Muniz Tosado-Leiva, in June of 1954. Employed by the Carnival Toys Corp., a division of Lorraine Industries, she was transferred to Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1961, where she continued to work until she moved with the company to Peoria, IL, in 1983. In 1986, she returned to the greater Bridgeport area and began working with People's Bank until her retirement in 1991. Once retired from Peoples, she moved to Florida and worked for the Florida Highway Dept. until her second retirement in 2001. While in Bridgeport, she was very active in many community and civic organizations; The Spanish Merchants Association, the Puerto Rican Parade, The Handicapped Children and Adult Org. for P. R. as well as simultaneously running several private businesses, including two grocery stores, a beauty salon, two fashion boutiques and a private "Domino Club". Doña Josie is survived by her husband Gregorio, her daughter Olga Leiva, two grandchildren: Raquel Leiva-Ferrer and Kevin Leiva, two great-grandchildren: Victoria and Natalia, and multiple nieces and nephews. Friends and family may call on Friday, April 6, 5 to 9 p.m., at the Luz de Paz Funeral Home 426 E Washington Ave, Bridgeport, CT 06608. Service will take place at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 32 Bonnie View Drive, Trumbull on Saturday, April 7, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Easton Mountain Grove Cemetery.
