Our Mamita was the matriarch of a large family. She had 10 children, 34 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. She is also the aunt of 10 nephews and nieces and was the great aunt of their children and grandchildren. She was a modest woman of great faith and courage. Mamita was a talented seamstress; a skill she developed at a young age to help support her family. She also had a beautiful voice and sang in parandas and was a wonderful cook. She came from humble beginnings, but was resourceful and extremely hardworking, and ultimately became the owner of her own business. Mamita was widowed at a young age. Her values, beliefs, and loyalty to her husband influenced her choice to remain single for the remainder of her life. She was a private and quiet person, particularly in larger groups, however on a one to one basis, she had the ability to express such care through her words, and when she did that, her love for you radiated from her, and it was unmistakable. She had such great sincerity, and was a woman who continuously made sacrifices for the betterment of her family. For this reason, she even left her home, her beloved island of Puerto Rico. Our Mamita was a selfless and giving person. Her grandchildren remember her always giving them a few dollars on their birthdays, even when she had little to spare. She was a wonderful teacher who led by example. Her grandchildren viewed her as the rock that kept the family together. Many of us have so many childhood memories of seeing her daily or spending weekends visiting Mamita, and as a result, we were able to make some of our best memories together with our cousins; our family. With so many cousins, we didn't need friends. We had each other, and the love and support of family was something we know our grandmother cherished. Family and faith were first and foremost in her life. In her final days, Mamita demonstrated strength beyond explanation. And when we witnessed her struggle with the physical pain that came as she became more ill, it was amazing to see the joy and comfort that being surrounded by family and prayer brought to her. Our Mamita loved her life and her family, and she held on tight. She made certain to let her children know her wish for them. She told them, "Yo no necesito nada y lo unico que yo quiero es que ustedes, la familia, se lleven bien, que no tengan enojos ni rencores y esten todos en paz y harmonia." Her dying wish was for her family to have peace, harmony, and tranquility amongst them. We will NEVER know a stronger, more humble and giving woman. We will honor her not only by NEVER forgetting what she wanted for her family, but by trying to live each day as she lived, loving as she loved, giving as she gave, having faith during our most challenging times, having strength during our most difficult times, valuing our loved ones above all, and living with compassion, hope, forgiveness, peace, harmony, and tranquility. Our Mamita would always say goodbye to her loved ones by saying Dios de bendiga y la Virgencita te favoresca y te acompane which means God bless you and may the Virgin Mary protect you and be by your side. As we say goodbye to you, our Mamita, we are so blessed to have had you, such an amazing woman, in our lives, and to have received your love, guidance, and life lessons. We will forever be comforted by knowing that not only do we have God and the Virgin Mary's blessings to protect us, but we now have you up there with them to bless, guide, and protect us always. We will love you forever Mamita.
