We, my older brother Rich Kennedy, (who Jeff is now chillin with in Heaven), Jeff Blake, John Howard and myself ( Rod Kennedy) started out on our camping trip early one Friday morning. Rich and Jeff were both 16 at the time and Rich had just gotten his license to drive. John was the only one who had ever been camping before supplied a tent and a few other camping essentials; emphasizing "a few". He had a canteen, pocked knife, a pan to cook in, a hatchet, and a couple sleeping bags he borrowed from his older brother Bob. We had no clue where we were going so Rich and Jeff decided that we would head up towards the Catskill Mountains and look for camping signs.
After a couple hours of driving, we decided that we were hungry and found a small rickety old eatery along the side of the road. We walked in to find about four tables occupied and an open booth in the back. After we sat down it seemed that ten minutes had passed and the waitress had not come over to give us menus much less take our order. Rich walked up to the counter and asked the old man there who seemed to be in charge if there was a problem. The old man pointed to a sign behind him that said; "we reserve the right to deny service to anyone". My brother looking very puzzled said "so what's the problem"? The old man said, "Your friend there is a negro". Without hesitation my brother yelled across the room "Jeff their not gonna serve us cause your black". The whole room was suddenly silent. Jeff, (as if they rehearsed it) immediately, with a shocking look, looked down at his arms, with his wide smile and his unique "chuggie laugh" screamed, "OH MY GOD I'M BLACK"!!
A very tense moment but It was so funny, I just started cracking up at Jeff's reaction. Needless to say, we didn't get breakfast there and those who knew Rich and Jeff are probably not surprised at their reactions to the old man's bigotry. Being from our little microcosm at RNHS, I was shocked and felt like REALLY? This really goes on up here.
Anyway, a unique funny moment with Jeff that I will remember for the rest of my life. We all appreciated his voice, his humor, his laugh, and his smile. Miss ya Jeffery!! God bless your family!!!

It is all the personal stuff, not just the tasks we did at school. The era of "Shake and Blake", trying to get you and Chip to go home after pratice, the "limo service" to take you home on those cold nights after practie and those talks we had,and being a "gymn class Hero" for seven years in PE. I always feel like a parent when we lose one of our Rye Neck kids so I share the grief of his family and his friends. I participated in the fun years of his life and feel lucky to have been his Coach and even more important, Jeff's friend.

Jeffrey was always fun to be with. As mentioned many times before. His laughter was one of a kind and you always knew he was around. He had a way of turning a bad day into a good one. I never knew how he was feeling inside, but he always seemed happy to me and it was contagious. He was definitely one special person and so sad to know I'll never see him again.
I think I'll miss his beautiful voice and singing with him most of all.
My condolences to Jeff's entire family-I'm so sorry for your loss. We've all lost a good friend.

Jeff, I am very saddened to hear of your passing. I looked up to you growing up. You had such flair, confidence and a fun aura about you. There was a basketball family of sorts at Rye Neck in those years of the 1970's and at Columbus Park, and I always marveled, even with Hubby at your back, how you played the game with such joy and panache. It sounds like you've lived a life filled with love and friendship. I commend you, my friend. Dan Markowitz

To our friend and our brother, Jeff Blake,
Where do you start? The grade school antics, the music, basketball teammates...
However, no one can bring up your name without remembering your smile and your laugh - Oh, that laugh ALWAYS put a smile on my face...However, the greatest gift JB left us was how he treated everyone - It didn't matter where you were from or the color of your skin, he treated everyone the same - It is lesson I will never forget - May you Rest In Peace - God Bless, Jeffrey! You will truly be missed - JG
