Obituary of Maria Mercedes Alicea

Maria Mercedes Alicea, age 87, of Bridgeport entered into peaceful rest on Sunday, November 13, 2016 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving children. She was the beloved wife of the late Manuel Alicea, Sr.; her husband of almost 57 years. Maria was born in Camuy, Puerto Rico daughter of the late Juan Roman and Inocencia Rosario prior to relocating to Bridgeport in 1953. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Parish and a member of the Cursillo movement. She is the loving mother of Maria (Jose) Rodriguez, Manuel (Patria) Alicea, William (Lucy) Alicea, Olga Alicea, Edwin (Elisa) Alicea, Ana (Antonio)Gonzalez, Esther (Benjamin) Vega, and Maritza (Sonia) Almodovar; and the grandmother of 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Elsie Alicea, one sister, four brothers and a host of nieces and nephews and friends who will sorely miss her. She is predeceased by her three sons Luis Alicea, Kenny Alicea, and Jose Alicea. Friends and family are invited to call on Friday, November 18, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Funeraria Luz de Paz, 426 E. Washington Ave. Funeral Services will take place Saturday, November 19 beginning at 8 A.M. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9 A.M. at St. Mary's Church. Her interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport.
